The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is a federal tax credit incentive that was established to help people from these target groups move from economic dependency to self-sufficiency. At the same time the WOTC enables employers to reduce their federal income tax liability.
The WOTC target groups include certain public assistance recipients, veterans, persons who have completed or are completing rehabilitative services and qualified ex-felons.
The maximum tax credit is $9,000 per new hire who starts work by August 31, 2011. An employee hired through the program may not have worked for the hiring employer anytime in the past. They may neither be a relative or dependent of the business owner nor a majority owner of the business.
